Self love is a buzzword around the wellness community, but the meaning is quite foreign to many people. Why? Because it means something different for everyone! Each person on this Earth is unique, and because of that, we all have unique ways of showing ourselves love. But regardless of the what, why, and how, self love is a powerful part of growing as an individual and being the very best version of yourself.

Look, we get it. Being unhappy is easier. You just allow negative thoughts to take over and voila! You’re miserable and stuck, feeling inferior and ultimately dissatisfied with yourself. But, even though it’s easier, nobody should be satisfied with being unhappy.

The path to happiness is aligned with that of self improvement and love. It comes with bumps and turns and hurdles and crossroads. It’s not easy; it’s a lifelong commitment. And though the road may be rocky, the outcome is well worth it.

Here are a few bridges you’ll need to cross over on the road to self love.

Practice mindfulness.

Before you can love yourself, you must know yourself. To understand what you think, feel, and desire, rather than what others want or expect for you, practice mindfulness. Being mindful of the present opens our awareness of self, which is key to unlocking the next step of self development.

Nourish your body.

Your body does a lot for you; show your gratitude by nourishing it. Be intentional about what you put into your body, and always make wellness a priority. This not only includes nutrition, but also exercise, intimacy, proper sleep, and more. A healthy lifestyle begins with a healthy body, and with a healthy body, a healthy mind and spirit will follow.

Learn the power of no.

Eliminating activities that drain your spirits, deplete your energy, or harm you physically and/or emotionally will help you love yourself more. The power of saying no to things you don’t want to do helps you lead a more positive and healthy lifestyle. Set boundaries and focus your time and energy on things you like. You’ll find that by saying no to things that don’t align with your values, ideas, thoughts, or goals, you’re actually practicing an act of self love.

Surround yourself with positivity.

You can’t navigate the path to self love all alone; you need love and support from those around you in order to remain positive and productive. Build a community of people who fill you with light. Energy is contagious, and you want the energy you’re catching to be fun-loving and full of joy.

Embrace Imperfection.

You are human, and being human means you are imperfect. Rather than beating yourself up from mistakes and hardships, learn and grow from them. Once you accept and embrace your imperfection, a weight is lifted off your shoulders and you are able to love the human underneath.

Find your purpose.

Living intentionally will allow your mind, body, and spirit to thrive, and in turn, you will accept and love yourself more. A purpose, whatever that may be, helps you to live intentionally, and your purpose can be found through faith. With faith, you will be able to build trust in not only yourself, but something bigger. Faith will take you on journey and help you explore your inner thoughts and feelings, your passions, your emotions, and most of all will help you appreciate you.

While it may mean something different to everyone, one thing is certain: self love is powerful. It will allow you to try new things and take risks and move a bit closer to the best version of yourself. Once you believe you are worth it, you’ll realize your full potential and the infinite world of possibilities that awaits you. The rocky road to radical self love starts with one step.
